In a significant undercover operation, eight individuals were arrested on drug charges at a convenience store in Hastings, as reported by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office. This extensive investigation, named Operation Express Jackpot, resulted in the confiscation of gambling machines, drug paraphernalia, and $400,000 in cash.
The Sheriff’s Office acted on multiple tips from concerned citizens about suspicious activities at the 207 Express store on West Church Street. This location, which is just a few blocks from the Hastings library and known locally as Florida 207, became the focal point of the investigation. Sheriff Rob Hardwick emphasized the importance of community vigilance, stating, “Our citizens reached out to us with concerns, and our detectives responded immediately. … Please remember, if you see something, say something.”
An initial investigation provided substantial evidence of narcotics and illegal gambling activities both inside and outside the store. Acting on this evidence, undercover detectives engaged in several covert operations. They purchased drug paraphernalia, participated in electronic gambling, and made multiple narcotics transactions in the store’s parking lot.
Following these covert operations, the Sheriff’s Office obtained a search warrant, which was executed on May 31. During the search, investigators discovered four gambling machines, a significant amount of drug paraphernalia, and equipment used to pay out gambling winnings. Additionally, approximately $400,000 in cash was seized from the location.
The individuals arrested in connection with this operation include Hui Fang Iris Liu, Reginald Smith, James Patterson, Yvonne Hall, Silas Green, William Peeples, Phillip Myers, and Sherry Williams. These arrests were made based on substantial evidence gathered from the undercover operations and subsequent search of the premises.
Sheriff Hardwick praised the efforts of the community and the dedicated work of his team, noting that the operation’s success was largely due to the collaboration between vigilant citizens and law enforcement. The Sheriff’s Office continues to urge the public to report any suspicious activities, reinforcing the mantra, “If you see something, say something.”
This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office to combat drug-related crimes and illegal gambling in the community. The collaboration between law enforcement and the public is crucial in maintaining safety and security in Hastings and surrounding areas. By addressing these issues head-on, the Sheriff’s Office aims to deter future criminal activities and uphold the law with diligence and integrity.
The arrests and the significant seizure of cash and illegal items underscore the importance of continued vigilance and proactive policing. As the investigation continues, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to protecting the community and ensuring that justice is served.
